The Shreveport Times reported last week that the Shreveport Fire
Department (SFD) has purchased two electric-powered Segway Human
Transporters (HTs) for use during such events as the Mardi Gras parade
and at "mass casualty incidents."
According to the Times, the $4,000 Segway HTs were bought using funds from an emergency readiness grant and are equipped with cargo compartments for medical supplies and equipment. The newspaper noted that the HTs are powered by two lithium-ion batteries and can travel at speeds of up to 12 miles per hour.
The Times reported that the Segway HTs will be a part of SFD's existing five-member bicycle medical team.
